Bowl Season 2007-2008

January 7th 2008 BCS National Championship Game

No. 1 Ohio State (OSU) v. No. Louisianna State (LSU)
Here we go. After over a month of footbll we have reached the final college game in the 2007 season. No. 1 against No. 2, but does the game matter? Only when it comes to entertainment and bragging rights. If LSU wins we will see, for a second time, a tie in the BCS Standings. OSU will be the No. 1 team in the country, and LSU will remain No. 2 and hold the title games trophy. This is the problem with the BCS.

I have written several article on the BCS and how it needs to change, so tonight I will not ruin the game and I will aviod ranting and raving about the BCS.

So here is the much anticipated National Game and a break down of what we will see.

QB Match-up: LSU has the advantage with Matt Flynn. He is calm and collective in the clutch, and is alaways a threat to run. His back-up man, Ryan Perriloux, has completed 20 of 30 passes and 249 yards in the win over Tennessee.

RB Match-up: Again LSU has the advantage. While OSU has the best RB in the league, LSU brings a gang of runners who can all break for big yards. LSU will have to focus on defending Chris Wells, however OSU has to defend against Jacob Hester, Keiland Williams, Charles Scott and Trindon Holliday.
WR Match-up: OSU leads the game in this match-up. If Doucet is having a good day then LSU takes the lead with WR's, however becuase the offensive line of OSU will give Boeckman time in the pocket then Hartline and Robiskie will break open and put themselves in the right places to make the big plays.
Offensive Line Match-up: OSU is only going to have to play even with LSU's line, while LSU will have to keep OSU's defense out of the backfield. This will be a huge task for the Tigers as they will face Vernon Gholston.
Defensive Line Match-up: Vernon Gholston has single-handedly defeated the offensive lines of several teams, however his consistency has been a factor. If he can be neautralized by the offensive line of LSU then the Tigers will have the defensive edge tonight. However coming off of 15 days of rest and entering a title game, I see a big game for Vernon Gholston.
Special Teams Matchup: Special Teams can win a game and tonight we get a match-up of two great special teams. The adavantage is slight, however the punt returners and the kickers for OSU are a tad bit better than LSU's.

Coaching: The two coahes tonight have a strong history and are both incredible coaches. Neither coach will have any trouble getting into the Hall of Fame and both will compete for Coach of the Year, and National Titles in years to come. That being said Coach Jim Tressel for OSU has only one blemish on his record- that Florida game last year. Tressel wins a slight advantage in the Les Miles/Jim Tressel Match-up.
The Mind says: Tonight is going to be a spectacular game. Some say that LSU will win by 2 or more touchdowns. And to look at the stats, why not? LSU leads OSU in all offensive categories. Tonight however, like many games, will come down to defense and special teams. Both OSU and LSU have great offenses and so they will have to overcome the defensive lines. OSU has the better line, however they live and die by Gholston. LSU has enough offense to overcome the disadvantage on defense and special teams.
LSU Tigers over Ohio State Buckeyes (4-7 points decides outcome)
