This Week In Sports

Finally all is right in the sports world! Brett Favre is back in football. Michael Vick has found a team. Stephen Strasburg got his contract. And John Smoltz has come full circle, well not quite full.
Brett Favre is at the one place i have always wanted to see him play. Minnesota. I have never been a Green Bay fan, some my image of Favre has nothing to do with the colors green and gold. He isn't the greatest quarterback i have been able see play because of Green Bay. For me, he is the greatest because of his stats, and he proved last season that he could keep those up no matter where he goes. If you look at Favres career numbers, minus the time he spent in New York, and then compare it to his games in New York, you will see that he didn't falter at all. Most his the "bad" stats were accumulated at the end of the season, but overall, he was on pace with his entire career. Without stumbling there was no way he could retire. Now he has a really good shot at a Superbowl, and he has a chance to get the Packers back for all of the absurdities they put him through when he tried to come back and play for them again. Now wonder he choose the Vikings, Green Bay burned the bridges.

Welcome back Michael Vick. I know all of the controversy that surrounds this one, but who cares. get over it and move on. Everyone deserves a second chance and everyone deserves a chance to do what they love. Vick is a football player, and now he is with the Philadelphia Eagles. The only bad thing about this is that my Carolina Panthers weren't the team who signed him. Well that and Donavan McNabb may be facing his last year in Philly. The team says the two quarterbacks are going to be on the field at the same time, and that Vick will be a tight end and a receiver, but he is taking snaps and making passes at training camp. McNabb even commented that he was okay with Vick getting some time in the pocket. Sounds to me like all signs point to a slow transition into a starting spot for Vick.

Stephen Strasburg signed the largest contract of any MLB draftee this week. He received 15.1 million dollars of 4 years. This is 50 percent larger than the record contract of Mark Prior, he received 10.5 million before he ever through a pitch. I think this is great. I mean experts have said over and over, Strasburg s the greatest MLB pitcher there is, and yet he hadn't played a game yet. With that much hype, shouldn't the kid be guaranteed 3.5 million a year? yes. sources inside the clubhouse say this was just a little more than what they wanted to pay, but was a victory for them because they signed the prospect and saved a lot of money. Boras was originally seeking 25 million for the kid, were as the Nats were thinking about 12 million. But how long will he be around? Ryan Zimmerman was signed under the notion that he would get a new field while in Washington, and that they would bring him help and build a team around him. Having an MVP caliber season, he has done his part. And what have the Nats done? They brought him Adam Dunn and Strasburg. But the rumors are there, and with a trade-able contract it sounds like Strasburg might become a Yankee and 4 Yankee prospects might now head towards Washington. I know Zim, and with the way he is playing and the fact that he is as close to home as he can get in the League, he will stick all the trades out and remain a National for a long time. Lets hope the help comes anyway.

As I said, John Smoltz has not yet come full circle, but the ex National League East pitcher, is back in the National League East. The Redsox released John earlier this month, and for a second it looked like he might have to retire. Then he breathed some life. Smoltz, like a few of his fans, knew he wasn't done pitching, knew he could still throw, and couldn't accept that he was out of baseball on someone else's terms. Now Smoltz is back. He is a St. Louis Cardinal, and he is playing in a league that he has known and dominating his entire career. the one small issue, is that he is a starting pitcher who may have to settle for a bullpen spot. This isn't a bad thing as far as I am concerned, but the reason Smoltz left the Atlanta Braves was because he was looking for a starting job and they wanted a closer. He was not willing to move to the bullpen when Bobby Cox and the Braves decided he could no longer start for them. He had done his time in the bullpen and had a record season, yet Smoltz didn't like it and now has hopped from the Braves, to the Sox, and now the Cards. I hope for his sake he is a good starter again, however as a fan, i would love to see him excel as a closer for a few seasons before retiring. Great starters are good for the team, and fun to watch but once you can no longer do that the next best thing for the fans and the team, is the starter. Your body can handle one inning much easier than 7 or more, and what better than to know, you are the guy the team calls on to finish off the other team and wrap up the win? you are the teams guarantee that no matter how close the 9th inning is, you are the savior and you will not let them down. John Smoltz- Hall of Fame Starter, and now Hall of Fame Closer.
